Music-making has been linked to benefits in many areas of school life, from academic achievement to improved personal and social development. Yet far too many young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are unable to fulfil their musical talent, unnecessarily restricting their life chances. We want to change that.
School Ground Sounds works with secondary schools and young people in lower income areas of London to provide additional music opportunities and to enhance their music education. Our programme of activities currently includes:
The Grit School is a free 7-week music industry & artist development crash course. It is aimed at 16-24-year-olds based in South London, who are looking for guidance & support for building a career in the music industry. Over the 7 weeks, participants will have access to a balance of creative workshops, industry seminars and access to free studio time and rehearsal space.
The sessions will be hosted by industry leaders in their fields, including major and indie label representatives, music publishers, artist managers, established and professional session musicians, producers and songwriters. There will be opportunities to collaborate with like-minded, local musicians and to build contacts within the music industry.
The Grit School takes place between April 15th – May 31st.
The course aims to offer a practical and realistic view of the ever-changing industry, arming young musicians with the tools, knowledge and networks they need to stay inspired in pursuing a career path in music.
The Grit School ends with a chance for the young musicians to put into practice everything they have learnt over the 6 weeks and perform at The Grit School Live Showcase. This year, we are thrilled to be able to offer three dedicated Grit Schoolers guaranteed internships in different sectors of the music industry.
