Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice

THE ROLE

On this Highways Operative apprenticeship programme you will learn all the skills to build, maintain and repair public highways and footpaths. Following the apprenticeship programme we would expect you to have developed skills in:

  • Working independently using your own initiative
  • Principles of highway maintenance
  • Understand safe working practices and Health and Safety regulations within the work environment
  • Levelling and setting out, Access ERR and Small Tools
  • Concrete + reinstatement of concrete slabs
  • How to safely locate underground services
  • How to reinstate modular surfaces and concrete footways
  • Excavation Reinstatement & Kerb laying

 

On this apprenticeship programme you will complete an Apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance with the CITB where you will gain:

  • CAA Level 2 Diploma in Highways Maintenance
  • Level 2 NVQ in Highways Maintenance
  • Level 1Functional Skills (maths and English)
  • NRSWA Operative Card
  • Abrasive wheels

 

In addition to the formal training programme you will receive hands on experience including mentoring and coaching from experienced members of the team. There will be a rotational work programme to gain experience of numerous different aspects of the Highways Sector.

 

The apprenticeship programme will be 2 years in length.

THE CANDIDATE

Ideal candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Ability to achieve level 1 functional skills in Maths and English
  • Good standards of communication
  • IT literate
  • Able to work in a team
  • Willingness to learn
  • Interest in construction/engineering
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
