OnSide Youth Zones is a charity with one simple aim…to build a network of 21st Century Youth Clubs, giving young people, safe and inspiring places to go in their leisure time. Young people need our help now more than ever before. Whether it’s a lack of ambition or qualifications, or negative behaviour and attitudes, the current childhood crisis is real and well documented. OnSide Youth Zones are designed to give young people aged 8–19 years old (25 for those with a disability) somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time; occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new skills and socialising in a safe, positive way. Youth Zones are there for young people in deprived areas, where the alternative for many is spending their evenings on the streets or isolated in their bedrooms, surfing the internet.


The purpose of this role is to establish a new café within the Youth Zone and take the lead on running all aspects of the catering provision. To cook and create inspiring, innovative and simple dishes, be passionate about local produce, love food, have a “can do” attitude and relate well to young people.


  • To lead the catering provision, ensuring that the café is an integral part of the Youth Zone offer and contributes to the support and development of young people.
  • To be responsible for managing a sustainable service; taking responsibility for pricing, the provision of a popular menu, working to a strict budget and minimise waste.
  • To create stock control procedures and ensure they are adequate, up to date and adhered to.
  • To line manage the catering team, together with arranging and managing staffing rotas for the café, including staff holidays, within the staffing budget.
  • To record catering performance against key indicators e.g. number of meals served and weekly profit.
  • To order and control all stock, including identifying alternative suppliers.
  • To ensure all Health & Safety and Environmental Health requirements are adhered to, namely:   reporting of all faulty equipment, reporting of any health & safety issues and compliance with food hygiene regulations, in particular ensuring food is stored correctly.



Experience is the following areas would be advantageous:  

  • Working at a senior level within a catering environment.
  • Dealing with customers.
  • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental issues.
  • Planning and costing menus.
  • Planning and providing healthy meals including nutritional information.
  • Supervising catering staff
