OnSide Youth Zones is a charity with one simple aim…to build a network of 21st Century Youth Clubs, giving young people, safe and inspiring places to go in their leisure time. Young people need our help now more than ever before. Whether it’s a lack of ambition or qualifications, or negative behaviour and attitudes, the current childhood crisis is real and well documented. OnSide Youth Zones are designed to give young people aged 8–19 years old (25 for those with a disability) somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to in their leisure time; occupying their bodies and minds with fun activities, learning new skills and socialising in a safe, positive way. Youth Zones are there for young people in deprived areas, where the alternative for many is spending their evenings on the streets or isolated in their bedrooms, surfing the internet.


The Head of Youth Work holds overall responsibility for delivering a vibrant, open-access Youth Zone for the young people of Croydon, working with up to 300 young people per session.  They will be accountable for the effective development and delivery of the core provision including junior, senior, inclusion  and holiday clubs.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • To recruit a high quality, motivated team of staff and volunteers
  • Through the Youth Zone delivery team, to deliver a 7 day a week, inclusive offer to young people
  • To work within the performance framework of the Youth Zone and OnSide
  • To ensure the offer is well communicated to all young people
  • Act as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and form part of the Safeguarding Panel Review team
  • To demonstrate commitment to the process of feedback and review of the Youth Zone’s delivery, and develop systems and procedures to measure performance in order to demonstrate the impact of the Youth Zone, and ensure continuous improvement of delivery;
  • To develop relationships and partnerships within the borough, exploring areas for joint working where appropriate;
  • To network at a senior level with key partners, stakeholders and supporters, in order to maintain relationships at the highest level to secure significant support;
  • As part of the senior management team, to deliver a focused, measurable contribution to the Youth Zone’s overall strategic plan


We are looking to recruit an experienced and passionate Youth Worker to with solid, hands on experience in delivering high quality, open access youth work, and managing targeted projects, to lead the team of full and part time staff and volunteers to provide an incredible service to the young people of Croydon. This role forms part of the Senior Leadership Team.


Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Substantial experience of youth work
  • Substantial experience of leading and managing staff and volunteers
  • Significant experience of managing staff and volunteers
  • A track record of successful project management
  • Experience of working with a range of IT systems
  • Experience of working within a team and prioritising work to deliver results
  • Experience of managing and budgets
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to relate to young people from all backgrounds
  • A professional Youth Work qualification is desirable
  • GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English is essential
