CALAT is one of the largest adult education providers in the country offering more than 500 part-time courses every year in various venues across the borough of Croydon on behalf of Croydon Council.


Our award-winning provision has been delivering courses to residents in the borough for over 70 years. The programme includes a variety of recreational, academic, pre-vocational and vocational courses in childcare and teaching assistant training, creative arts, health and social care, business administration, ICT, languages, English and maths, English for speakers of other languages and courses for adults with learning disabilities.


We also work with businesses and employers to deliver training aimed at raising the skills level of employees and developing the workforce.



This course will enable you to gain the skills supporting a teacher in the classroom and wider school activities. It targets the key skills, knowledge and competence that employers would expect of someone working at this level as a Teaching Assistant in a school setting.


Qualification level and title

  • OCR Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools 
  • OCN Level 1 Award in Prevent Duty Awareness 
  • C & G Level 1 Award in Employability Skills


The Course


  • Location: CALAT Thornton Heath Centre
  • Start Date: 28 Sep 2020
  • End Date: 21 Jun 2021
  • Course Duration: 30 weeks
  • Time: Mon 09:30-12:30, 13:00-15:00




  • Minimum of level 1 written and spoken English.
  • You will need to work or volunteer in a schools for a minimum of 100 hours over the period of the course whilst working towards the OCR level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. This involves compiling a portfolio of evidence which will be internally assessed and externally verified. 
  • Attendance at a pre-course information and interview session plus a minimum of level 1 written and spoken English. You will be asked to complete all paperwork necessary for CALAT to claim government funding which subsidises the cost of the course. 
  • You will need to have a current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Disclosure) certificate dated within the last 12 months by the London Borough of Croydon or undergo the checks required (included in the course fee) within a school setting

Free, if on qualifying benefits (proof of benefits e.g. benefit award letters, Universal Credit statements etc. need to be provided). 

Help with Fees/Childcare: 
Discretionary Learner Support Fund support is offered to those that are on a low household income and offers up to 90% off the cost of your course though eligibility criteria may vary during the academic year or term in which your course is running. 

Our Childcare Support Fund is also available upon request.
