For three years and three months, you will work within the Public Health team in Croydon Council to develop the knowledge and skills of public health needed to apply for UKPHR Public Health Practitioner registration, whilst also studying towards a Level 3 BSc Public Health qualification at the University of East London. You will need to be able to start on the University of East London BSc in Public Health Programme on 22nd January 2026 (and able to enrol yourself onto this programme before January 2026 if successfully recruited to the role). 

 

The Public Health Practitioner Apprentice role focuses on health at a community or population level, assessing and managing risk of disease and ill-health, and the prevention of premature deaths. You will be involved in monitoring and promoting health and wellbeing to ensure fairer health outcomes between different communities and groups in Croydon. You will help put in place protection measures to protect the public from environmental hazards and risks. You will also have a role in evaluating sources of evidence, interpreting it and designing and planning health interventions.

 

You will work independently and collaboratively, across a wide range of settings (eg: office, community, healthcare), working with different types of organisations, and with professionals and members of the public. You will be part of the team of public health professionals based at Croydon Council and may report to public health specialists and consultants from a range of backgrounds (including medicine).

 

To be eligible for this opportunity you will need 

 

 

  •  Level 2 or equivalent English and Maths qualifications, grade 4 (C) or above and able to demonstrate capacity to study at degree level by either achieving a minimum of 96 UCAS tariff points to include at least 2 'A' levels or demonstrable equivalent education or work experience
  • Good communication skills and able to work closely with team members across health, social care and other service areas.
  • Must be able to express information, thoughts and ideas fluently and concisely in both spoken and written form to a variety of audiences and assess the needs of the situation and tailor communication accordinglAbility to work independently, manage and prioritise own workload, and cope with competing demands
  • Ability to problem solve and deliver work to tight timescales
  • Ability to use databases, create reports and analyse & research data on internet
  • Ability to work flexibly and effectively within teams to achieve shared objectives/goals
  • Understanding of need to observe confidentiality 
  • Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Power Point skills. 
  • Experience in demonstrating interpersonal skills with ability to develop effective working relationships
  • You might be expected to work out-of-hours or on-call so will need to be flexible and adaptable.
