Resident’s safety is of great importance to Croydon Council. The risks from a house fire are all too familiar to many of us. To improve the service to private tenants and property owners the Council is recruiting a fire safety apprentice.
For up to three years you will work within the Private Sector Housing Team whilst studying towards a Level 3 in Fire Safety Advisor and / or Level 4 course in Fire Safety Inspector. The Level 4 course includes a Diploma in Fire Safety and is being run online by XACT.

The Private Sector Housing Team are a ‘regulatory service’ and have responsibilities under the Housing Act and Building Safety Act to improve residential fire safety standards and take enforcement action to remedy failures. During the training you will transfer between work areas of the Council (building control, event safety and the compliance team) to allow you to obtain relevant experience to support the qualification.
In this role you will contribute to the wider service objectives around fire safety including the inspections, scheduling and monitoring of remedial work in the full range of private buildings. As competencies increase the role will involve:
· Inspecting of buildings to identify regulatory fire safety hazards and legislative breaches.
· Recommending solutions and measures to minimise fire safety risk
· Use risk assessment principles and relate to legislation, regulations and articles, backed by Approved Documents and British Standards.
· Monitor the execution of fire and building safety works to ensure buildings comply with regulatory requirements
· Recommending building fire safety management improvements
With this national qualification you would be eligible to pursue a career assessing fire safety in complex premises including as a:
· Regulator of fire safety in the fire brigade or building inspector service
· Fire risk assessor or fire safety professional
· Designer or architect of new or improvements to existing buildings
To be eligible for this opportunity you will need
·At least two GCSEs, in maths and English of Grade 4 or higher
·AND at least two A levels with one in a science or technology subject OR equivalent level 3 qualifications (BTEC)
·Good communication skills and able to work closely with team members
·An understanding of the role of a fire safety inspecting officer
·An understanding of the assessment of fire risk
·Understand the benefits of legislation in protecting public safety
·A good communicator with colleagues and the public we serve
·An ability to work independently and as a good problem solver
